A homicide investigation expanded into a separate review after officers shot the suspect.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A woman’s fatal shooting on North Rural Street led police across Indianapolis on Thursday night before officers shot and arrested a 75-year-old homicide suspect near South Harding Street.
Police identified the woman as 65-year-old Patricia Wieber and the suspect as Ronald Cross. Investigators said Cross was arrested after a vehicle pursuit that ended near I-70, turning the case into both a homicide investigation and an officer-involved shooting review.
The first call came from the first block of North Rural Street, near East Washington Street, around 8:20 p.m. May 28. Officers found Wieber wounded by gunfire. She was taken to a hospital and later died. Witness information sent police toward Bullock Court, where officers located a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting.
Police said Cross and another man left Bullock Court in a different vehicle. Officers followed and attempted a stop near West Southport Road and Bluff Road. The driver got out and was taken into custody. Police said Cross then moved from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat and fled.
The chase continued north toward the near southwest side. Officers used stop sticks near Harding and Morris streets, and SWAT vehicles later helped stop the vehicle near the 1000 block of South Harding Street. Police said Cross fired at officers after the vehicle was stopped. At least three officers returned fire.
Cross was shot at least once and taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police said no officers or bystanders were injured. Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene, and police said body camera and dash camera footage recorded the encounter.
The officers who fired were placed on administrative leave while the Critical Incident Response Team and Internal Affairs review the shooting. The homicide case remains focused on Wieber’s death, while the police shooting review will examine the pursuit, the final stop and the officers’ use of force.
Police had not released full charging documents, a detailed motive or the complete sequence of evidence by Sunday. Cross was arrested in connection with murder, and further court action is expected to clarify the formal charges.
