SAVANNAH, Ga. — A significant fire broke out early Friday morning at the AutoNation Volkswagen dealership, prompting a swift response from emergency services amidst reports of a possible explosion and structural damage. At 9:49 a.m., Savannah Fire Department units were dispatched to the scene located at the corner of Abercorn Street and Eisenhower Drive.
Witnesses reported large plumes of thick smoke billowing from the dealership shortly after the fire ignited. Firefighters confirmed that the fire was contained by 11 a.m. but remain on-site to tackle several hot spots within the facility. Eyewitness accounts indicated that flames rapidly consumed the building, necessitating firefighters to break windows to access the main area and address the flames.
Reports indicated that the initial fire may have resulted from an explosion within the service area of the dealership. Emergency crews on the scene included arson investigators who are currently assessing the situation; however, authorities have not determined the exact cause of the fire.
Traffic disruptions have been substantial, with Abercorn Street closed between Stephenson Avenue and Eisenhower Drive to facilitate firefighting efforts. Northbound lanes have since reopened, although officials continue to advise motorists to seek alternative routes.
Fire officials have emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation as they work to ensure safety in the area. Officials from federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have also been noted in the vicinity, although it remains unclear whether they are providing direct assistance with the investigation.
As emergency personnel continue to battle residual flames, officials assured the public that their primary focus remains on containing any potential hazards in the area and safeguarding nearby residents. The situation is being monitored closely, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
