Man Shot Dead Moments After Leaving Chicago Restaurant

The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and later died.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago detectives are investigating after a 26-year-old man was fatally shot late Sunday as he left a restaurant in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, police said.

The shooting was reported about 11:36 p.m. in the 100 block of East 71st Street. Police said the man had just walked out of a restaurant when he noticed a man standing nearby. Moments later, gunshots were fired.

The victim was shot in the chest and grazed in the ankle, police said. He tried to run from the area but collapsed a short distance away. Officers gave aid before he was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities had not released the man’s name Monday morning. Police also had not announced any arrests or released information about a possible motive. Detectives were still working to determine what led to the shooting and whether the gunman fled on foot or in a vehicle.

The case is being handled by Area One detectives, who investigate serious crimes on parts of the South Side. Police said the shooting is being treated as a homicide. No additional injuries were reported in the initial police account.

The fatal shooting happened along East 71st Street, a major corridor running through Greater Grand Crossing. The area includes businesses, restaurants and homes, making late-night violence there a concern for residents and workers nearby.

The investigation remained active Monday. Police had not said when more information would be released, but the next steps could include identifying the victim, reviewing nearby video and seeking witnesses who were in the area late Sunday.
