Man receives life sentence for killing best friend in hammer attack

Birmingham, United Kingdom – A man has been sentenced to life in prison for a violent hammer attack that led to the death of his friend, Kenneth Ford. Gary O’Neill, 32, was found not guilty of murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.

The tragic incident took place at O’Neill’s Birmingham bedsit on February 27, 2022, where he fatally attacked 30-year-old Mr. Ford, described as O’Neill’s ‘best friend’. Concerned friends alerted the authorities, leading to the discovery of Mr. Ford with bruising and puncture wounds, including a fatal injury by his temple.

O’Neill was apprehended after passengers on a bus heading from Birmingham to Glasgow overheard him discussing the attack on the phone and promptly contacted the police. Despite his efforts to evade capture by exiting the bus in Glasgow, O’Neill was arrested by Police Scotland officers upon his arrival.

During the trial at Birmingham Crown Court, DNA evidence linked O’Neill to the crime scene, with blood from Mr. Ford found on his clothing. Additionally, phone analysis placed O’Neill at the scene on the night of the attack, further solidifying the case against him.

At his sentencing at Stafford Crown Court, O’Neill was handed a minimum term of 10 years in prison. Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood of West Midlands Police expressed hope that the verdict would bring some peace to Mr. Ford’s family during this difficult time.

The tragic loss of Kenneth Ford serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of violence and the impact it can have on loved ones. O’Neill’s sentencing, while providing some semblance of justice, cannot undo the pain caused by this senseless act.
