Man jailed for 12 years after “terrifyingly violent” sexual attack on teenage girl in North Yorkshire

Whitby, North Yorkshire – A convicted rapist was sentenced to 12 years in prison for a brutal sexual assault on a teenage girl in North Yorkshire. Dwayne Anthony Rhoden, 34, enticed the victim to his rented bedsit in Whitby on a Sunday night in August 2023, before initiating the violent attack.

Authorities reported that the victim managed to escape after one hour and called for help early the following morning. Rhoden was promptly arrested and taken into custody for questioning by North Yorkshire Police. Following a trial, he was found guilty of nine offenses, including multiple counts of rape and sexual assault.

During the sentencing at York Crown Court, it was revealed that Rhoden exhibited sadistic behavior during the assault, causing extreme physical and emotional distress to the victim. Detective Constable Matthew Edwards from North Yorkshire Police’s Safeguarding Investigation Team described the attack as terrifyingly violent and sustained, emphasizing Rhoden’s lack of remorse and the victim’s fear for her life.

In addition to the prison sentence, Rhoden was also placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the protection of the public. Detective Constable Edwards commended the victim for her bravery and determination in seeking justice, highlighting the importance of holding offenders like Rhoden accountable for their actions.

The court proceedings not only exposed the heinous acts committed by Rhoden but also provided closure for the victim as she continues to recover from the traumatic ordeal. Detective Constable Edwards expressed hope that the outcome of the trial would empower the victim to move forward with the support of her loved ones and the knowledge that justice had been served.
