Man in North Carolina Arrested After Roommate Found Buried in Shallow Grave

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A man from North Carolina faced charges of first-degree murder and concealment/failure to report a death after his missing roommate was discovered buried in their shared home’s backyard.

Elvin Noel Baca, 34, made an appearance in New Hanover County court following his arrest by the sheriff’s office. The victim, identified as Lawrence Grabka, 69, was reported missing before deputies found his body in a shallow grave.

The case unraveled after a friend of Grabka called for a welfare check when he failed to respond to calls. The friend discovered Grabka’s belongings in the house but could not locate him. Detectives later confirmed that Grabka had been killed and buried.

Katherine Roush, a close friend of Grabka, expressed her shock and grief over the loss. She described Grabka as a kind and gentle soul, expressing disbelief that he met such a tragic end.

Roush also revealed her suspicions about Baca, warning Grabka about his character. She recounted a chilling encounter with Baca on the fateful night, where she believed he had already committed the heinous act.

During Baca’s court appearance, he was denied bond and assigned to the capital defender’s office. The next court date was scheduled for April 18, while Sheriff Edward McMahon emphasized seeking justice for the victim’s family in light of the disturbing circumstances surrounding the case.
