Man found naked faces charges for stealing vehicle and gas station items

Deputies say a minor gas station theft led to more serious felony charges.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A man accused of stealing items from a gas station was arrested Tuesday after deputies linked him to a home burglary and a stolen vehicle, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the case quickly escalated from a low-level theft into a series of felony offenses involving an occupied residence and a stolen SUV. Investigators identified the suspect as Carlos Javier Santana, 36, and said he now faces multiple charges, including burglary and grand theft auto.

Deputies first responded early Tuesday to a Circle K along San Carlos Boulevard after a store employee reported a man leaving without paying for merchandise. Surveillance video captured the suspect calmly telling the clerk he would not pay before walking out with items valued at less than $50. He was seen leaving the area in a vehicle shortly afterward.

As deputies began searching for the vehicle described by the clerk, they located it at the Cascades at Clear Lakes apartment complex. Investigators said further inquiry revealed the SUV had been stolen earlier that morning during a break-in at one of the apartments. According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect forced his way into the home while a mother and her children were inside sleeping and took the victim’s keys before leaving in her vehicle.

Neighbors in the area said the incident raised concerns about safety and security. Some residents described the situation as unsettling, particularly because the burglary occurred while occupants were inside. Authorities confirmed that the suspect did not remain inside the home long and left shortly after taking the keys and vehicle.

Deputies tracked the suspect to an abandoned home on Church Street later that day. A K-9 unit assisted in the search, and officers found Santana inside the vacant structure. Investigators said he was naked when deputies located him and took him into custody without further incident.

The sheriff’s office said Santana faces charges of burglary of a dwelling, petit theft, and grand theft auto. Officials have not said whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues. Authorities also have not released details about whether drugs or other factors played a role in the suspect’s behavior.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that the case highlights how quickly a minor theft can escalate into more serious crimes. They noted that the initial shoplifting report ultimately led deputies to uncover a burglary involving an occupied residence, significantly increasing the severity of the case.

Investigators continue to review evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, to determine the full timeline of events. It remains unclear whether the suspect had any prior connection to the apartment complex or the victim.

The case remains under investigation, and deputies said additional updates could be released as more information becomes available.
