Police said foul play was not suspected after an employee discovered the unidentified man trapped in the restaurant’s kitchen ventilation system.
ATLANTA — Police are investigating the death of a man found wedged inside a kitchen vent at Walter’s Soul Food Cafe after an employee discovered him Monday morning, authorities said.
Atlanta police officers were sent to the restaurant on Cleveland Avenue Southwest shortly before 9 a.m. Sept. 14 after receiving a report of a person trapped at the business. The restaurant’s owner told responding officers that an employee had found the man inside a vent in the kitchen area. Atlanta Fire Rescue responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police said investigators found no immediate signs of foul play, but authorities had not determined how the man entered the ventilation system or what led to his death. His identity had not been publicly released as of Tuesday, and the circumstances surrounding the incident remained under investigation.
The discovery was made before the restaurant’s normal business activity was underway. Employees told local reporters that a worker arriving for the day first noticed the man and called for help. Parts of his body could be seen extending from the vent, according to accounts from workers at the scene. Authorities worked inside and around the restaurant as investigators examined the area.
Police described the man as being wedged inside the vent. Officials have not said how long he had been there, where he entered the ventilation system or whether he was attempting to reach the restaurant. No possible motive for entering the system has been announced, and investigators have not publicly linked the death to a burglary or any other crime.
Investigators also examined the roof as they worked to determine how the man reached the ventilation system. Local television footage showed officers using a ladder to access the top of the building. A neighboring property sits at a higher elevation near the restaurant, but police have not confirmed that the man used that area to reach the roof.
The incident drew police, firefighters and other investigators to the Cleveland Avenue business and interrupted operations at the restaurant. Customers who arrived later Monday found the doors closed while authorities continued working at the scene.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to determine the cause and manner of death. Authorities had not announced an autopsy finding by Tuesday, and police had not released additional information identifying the man or explaining how he became trapped.
The investigation remained open Tuesday. Police continued to describe the circumstances as undetermined while saying there were no signs of foul play at the scene.
