Man Arrested for Allegedly Blowing Up Home in Essex in Arson Attack

ESSEX, MD – Authorities have arrested a 52-year-old man, Michael Greensfelder, for allegedly causing an explosion at his shared home with his estranged wife and children in Essex. The incident, which took place on April 20 around 11:04 p.m. on Crafton Road, resulted in the destruction of the family’s house due to a fuel and gas explosion.

Baltimore County Police Department charged Greensfelder with first-degree arson, second-degree arson, first-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property, and animal cruelty. Despite the severity of the explosion, officials believe that fortunate circumstances, such as the late hour of the incident, prevented any bystanders from being harmed. The family dog, unfortunately, did not survive the blast.

The Baltimore County Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly called for a second alarm due to the extensive damage and the fire spreading to nearby homes. The unstable condition of the house posed challenges for the firefighters, preventing them from conducting an immediate search for potential victims.

During the chaos, a man nearby sought medical attention for burn injuries sustained during the explosion. Paramedics rushed him to a hospital, where he is expected to recover. Authorities have detained Greensfelder at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bail.

In the aftermath of the explosion, the community remains shaken by the events that unfolded that night. The significant damage caused by the explosion serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of arson and the devastating impact it can have on individuals and the community at large. Local authorities continue to investigate the incident to ensure justice is served for those affected by Greensfelder’s alleged actions.
