Life sentence handed down to man convicted of shooting and killing family members in Gwinnett County dispute

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – A Lawrenceville man, Bernie Ray Mack, has been found guilty of multiple charges, including malice murder and voluntary manslaughter, for the shooting deaths of his wife, Bridget Pearl Brooks-Mack, and her son-in-law, Jeremy Roshawn Santos, during a 2022 dispute. The jury in Gwinnett County deliberated and convicted Mack for his involvement in the deadly altercation that unfolded in the Harbor Bay neighborhood.

The tragic incident occurred on May 5, 2022, when Gwinnett County Police responded to reports of an active shooter in the area. Mack, involved in a dispute with his wife and stepdaughter and her husband, shot his spouse at their residence. The situation escalated when Briana and Jeremy Santos discovered Brooks-Mack’s lifeless body inside the home and called the authorities.

As the Santos couple attempted to drive away with their children, Mack pursued them in his vehicle. Jeremy Santos, armed with a handgun, fired at Mack’s car in self-defense. The chase ended with Mack chasing Jeremy Santos on foot, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds to the victim. Witnesses reported seeing Mack firing at Jeremy Santos numerous times before a neighbor intervened and convinced Mack to surrender his weapon.

In the aftermath of the violence, Mack was apprehended by law enforcement officers and subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to a 30-year term. The community was left in shock and mourning as they grappled with the senseless loss of life due to the domestic dispute turned deadly.
