Alonzo Sauls survived a close-range shooting and lengthy hospital stay after an armed robbery inside his senior living complex garage.
HOUSTON, Texas — A Houston man who survived being shot during a robbery inside the parking garage of his senior living complex is warning others to remain alert as police continue searching for the masked gunman about eight months after the attack.
Houston police released surveillance video showing a suspect approaching Alonzo Sauls in a garage off South MacGregor around 3:15 a.m. on Dec. 28. Sauls was sitting inside his truck when the man came near the vehicle, according to the video and Sauls’ account. The gunman has not been caught, and Sauls said he hopes releasing the images will help investigators identify him.
The surveillance video shows a masked man walking through the garage with a flashlight and looking into vehicles. When he reached Sauls’ truck, the man looked inside and initially walked away. Sauls said the suspect then returned with a gun and demanded his wallet and keys.
Sauls said the encounter unfolded so quickly that he had little time to respond. He said the gunman shot him once in the stomach at close range. The wound required an eight-hour surgery, and Sauls remained hospitalized for three weeks as he recovered.
Months later, Sauls is speaking publicly about the attack while the investigation remains open. He said surviving the shooting left him grateful, but the fact that the person responsible has not been found remains a concern. Sauls said he believes other people who use parking garages should pay close attention to what is happening around them.
“They need to know these garages are not safe,” Sauls said. His warning comes as investigators circulate surveillance images that could help someone recognize the person seen approaching vehicles before the shooting.
Police said the suspect was wearing a molded face mask, ripped jeans and black-and-white Nike shoes. Those details are among the limited identifying information authorities have made public. No name or other confirmed identity for the suspect has been released.
Sauls said he worries the person could commit another crime if he is not identified. “If they haven’t caught him, he’ll do it again,” he said. He also urged people using parking garages to remain aware of their surroundings and limit distractions.
The investigation remains unresolved. Police are asking anyone with information that could help identify the gunman to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
