Hazelwood School District Considers Ethics Complaint Against Attorney General Over DEI Policy Investigation

St. Louis, Missouri – The Hazelwood School District is considering filing an ethics complaint against Attorney General Andrew Bailey over his involvement in investigating the district’s DEI policies. This comes in the wake of a disturbing altercation that left 16-year-old Kaylee Gain hospitalized with a severe head injury.

The district revealed new details surrounding the incident, including a prior fight on school premises involving a uniformed guard. This event, occurring the day before Gain was injured, resulted in the suspension of at least one student, later confirmed to be Kaylee Gain by an attorney representing the other student involved in the altercation.

Following Gain’s suspension, which provided insight into the circumstances leading up to the altercation, Bailey attempted to link the incident to the school district’s DEI policies from four years ago. However, his “investigation” faced pushback from local police and school officials who refuted his claims regarding the absence of School Resource Officers.

Bailey’s actions, characterized by attempts to inject racial politics into the narrative and promote false information, have sparked controversy and calls for accountability from various parties, including the Missouri NAACP. The organization criticized Bailey for prioritizing a situation involving a white student while neglecting instances of racial discrimination and violence against Black students in other schools.

In response to Bailey’s allegations, the Hazelwood School District, along with legal representation, is exploring potential actions to address what they perceive as unfounded claims and misuse of power. The district is considering filing an ethics complaint against Bailey, citing violations of attorney ethics and the need to prevent misinformation from spreading unchecked.

The unfolding situation underscores the complexities surrounding issues of race, ethics, and accountability within educational institutions, as stakeholders navigate the aftermath of a tragic event and the implications of external scrutiny on school policies and practices. As the dialogue continues, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and fact-based assessment of the incident and its broader implications for the community and the educational system.
