Gunfire At Amarillo Apartments Leaves Two Teens Dead

Investigators said the shooting at Westminster Apartments appeared targeted and involved a rifle-style weapon.

AMARILLO, Texas — Amarillo police were searching Monday for two suspects after a weekend shooting at Westminster Apartments killed two teens and injured 10 other people during an early morning party.

The attack unfolded about 2 a.m. Saturday at the complex at 2415 South Coulter Street, near Westgate Parkway. Police said the dead were 17-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan and a 16-year-old boy. Officers said the case remained a homicide investigation, with detectives working to confirm who fired, how many weapons were used and why the apartment was targeted.

Investigators said the night began with a party at a separate location attended by juveniles and young adults. Some people were asked to leave that gathering, police said. They later followed partygoers to Westminster Apartments, where they tried to enter an apartment and opened fire. Amarillo Police Chief Thomas Hover said the suspects had an affiliation with the targeted location and were known to one occupant at the party.

The first officers arrived to find several victims. One male was pronounced dead at the scene. Nine people were initially taken to hospitals, and one later died. Police later said 10 people in all were injured. At least some suffered gunshot wounds. Investigators recovered a handgun on a landing outside one apartment and cartridge casings in an alley south of the complex. Police said the evidence suggested multiple weapons may have been fired.

Police described the shooting as targeted but said the suspects’ relationship to the victims was unknown. No charges had been announced by Monday, and the suspects’ names and ages had not been made public. Detectives released security video connected to the shooting and continued reviewing possible footage from nearby homes and businesses. Officials said they also were checking doorbell cameras and other private security systems in the area.

The shooting shook a residential area of southwest Amarillo, where the sound of rapid gunfire carried beyond the apartment grounds. A nearby resident and ABC 7 photojournalist, Steve Douglass, said he was awakened by what sounded like “machine gun fire” and then heard more shots. The complex remained a crime scene Saturday as police marked evidence and worked around apartment buildings, parking areas and walkways.

Police said the investigation was ongoing Monday. The next public milestone is expected to be an update on the search for the two suspects, the conditions of the wounded and whether detectives have confirmed a motive.
