VALRICO, FL – A mother in Valrico has been arrested after a harrowing incident that unfolded live on social media, leaving the community in shock. Chenise Willingham, 24, streamed her distressing actions on Instagram, declaring her intention to end her life and those of her three children. The dramatic turn of events was halted by quick-thinking family members who intervened just in time.
The incident began with a family dispute over childcare, which escalated to a breaking point for Willingham. As she walked with her children to a community pool early Thursday morning, she broadcasted her plans, expressing love for her children before attempting to carry out the tragic act.
Court documents reveal that Willingham tied herself and her children, ages 3, 2, and 8 months, together with a rope and jumped into the deep end of the pool. Family members, arriving just in time, scaled the pool fence and rescued the family, preventing what could have been a devastating tragedy.
Willingham was taken into custody and appeared at a child custody hearing via video from jail. The children’s father, Theo Williams, sought custody, claiming no involvement in the incident. However, attorneys argued that he was aware of Willingham’s mental health struggles and failed to protect the children.
A judge has ordered Willingham to remain in custody until a formal hearing determines her release conditions. Her past legal troubles, including incidents involving family disputes, have raised concerns about her mental health and the safety of her children.
Authorities credit the live-streamed video as a crucial factor in the timely intervention. Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office detectives noted that the broadcast served as a distress call, prompting the swift action of family members.
The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay emphasized the availability of local hotlines for those in crisis, underscoring the importance of seeking help. Meanwhile, Willingham faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, which could result in a life sentence if convicted.
A pre-trial detention hearing is scheduled for Monday morning to decide if Willingham will remain incarcerated as legal proceedings continue. The incident has sparked conversations about mental health support and the role of social media in crisis situations.
