Police say the victim’s son was arrested a day later in Jefferson Parish.
NEW ORLEANS — Southern University at New Orleans is mourning Dr. Samuel Eweni, 75, after police said he was fatally stabbed at a family home late Tuesday in New Orleans East. Two adult daughters were also stabbed and hospitalized, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
The department said officers were called just before 10 p.m. to the 8000 block of Pebble, where they found Eweni unresponsive and the women wounded. Detectives identified his son, 27-year-old Chukwuebuka Eweni, as the suspect and obtained a warrant for one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. He was located Wednesday in Jefferson Parish and placed in custody while undergoing a medical evaluation, police said.
SUNO said in a statement that Dr. Eweni was “more than an educator,” praising his mentorship in the College of Business and Public Administration. Colleagues recalled his steady presence during office hours and end-of-semester presentations. The university said counseling resources would be available for students and staff affected by the news. Administrators also extended condolences to the family as detectives worked to piece together the timeline of the attack.
Investigators believe the case is domestic in nature. Police have not released a motive or details about the weapon beyond describing the incident as an aggravated battery by cutting. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will provide the official cause of death after an autopsy. Authorities did not immediately provide conditions for the two hospitalized women and have not released their names.
Once the suspect is transferred to Orleans Parish, he is expected to be booked and to appear before a magistrate. The investigation will continue with interviews, evidence processing and potential review of neighborhood cameras. Further updates are expected when the coroner’s report is complete and after the first court hearing is set.
By midweek, police said the suspect remained in custody and the family home on Pebble was quiet, with crime-scene tape taken down and neighbors returning to their routines.
