Fatal Collision Under Phnom Penh’s Russey Keo Flyover Leads to Arrest and Tragic Loss of Four Lives

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – A tragic accident occurred beneath the Russey Keo flyover on January 20, 2024, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring four others. The driver of the white pick-up truck involved in the collision was apprehended at the scene, with eyewitnesses reporting heavy traffic at the intersection prior to the incident.

According to witnesses, multiple vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, were stopped at the traffic light under the flyover when the pick-up truck descended from the bridge and collided with a motorcycle and several other vehicles. The collision resulted in the tragic deaths of four motorcyclists, while four others sustained minor injuries and were promptly taken to Calmette Hospital for treatment.

Authorities acted swiftly, apprehending the driver and transporting him to the Russey Keo police station. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit, indicating a violation of drunk driving regulations.

Following the accident, the Phnom Penh Municipal Police’s land traffic division assessed and secured the motorcycles involved, while the bodies of the deceased were released to their families for traditional burial ceremonies.
