Family Seeks Justice After DA Fails to Convict Killer of Brandon Veal in Dekalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – The Dekalb County District Attorney’s office is facing challenges in the case regarding the death of Brandon Veal, as they do not believe they can establish beyond a reasonable doubt who was responsible for his murder.

On August 6, 2022, Brandon Veal visited a friend’s house accompanied by his girlfriend and her three-year-old son. Tragically, moments later, a fatal incident occurred that left Veal dead. The initial police report indicates that witnesses heard a sudden noise shortly after Veal returned to his car with his girlfriend and her child.

The girlfriend initially claimed that her young son accidentally discharged the weapon, which resulted in Veal’s tragic death. However, a report from the coroner revealed that the bullet’s trajectory suggests the shot came from the passenger side of the vehicle, contradicting the girlfriend’s account.

Although the girlfriend was arrested on suspicion of murder, the Dekalb County District Attorney’s office has decided not to pursue charges in this case. In a statement, Claire Simms Chaffins, Director of Communications for the office, expressed condolences to Veal’s family and explained that the lack of substantial evidence and witnesses made it impossible to meet the legal standard of proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Legal experts underscore the challenges in cases where the main witness is also the suspect, emphasizing the importance of additional evidence or motive to secure a conviction. Family members of Brandon Veal express frustration and disbelief over the decision, questioning the thoroughness of the investigation.

Witnesses present during the incident lament the lack of accountability in a situation where a life was taken, leaving loved ones grieving and seeking justice for their loss. As the family continues to push for answers and closure, the case remains unresolved, highlighting the complexities and uncertainties in delivering justice in such circumstances.
