Lviv, Ukraine – A Russian drone strike impacted the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on January 15, narrowly missing a prominent monument and resulting in damage across multiple neighborhoods. The drone came within about 40 to 45 meters of the Stepan Bandera monument before detonating, sending a shockwave that affected structures in the Frankivskyi, Halytskyi, and Zaliznychnyi districts.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that the explosion caused damage to several buildings, with assessments ongoing to determine the full extent. “The destruction includes a children’s playground, which is among the more visible impacts,” he noted, adding that efforts are underway to quickly improve the damaged areas.
This drone attack was part of a larger offensive conducted by Russian forces, who launched a total of 82 drones that night. Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept and neutralize 61 of them, but 21 drones successfully struck various targets across 13 locations, with debris scattered at three other sites, highlighting the pervasive threat that drone warfare poses.
In addition to physical damage, the incident has sparked concerns regarding public safety and infrastructure resilience in the city. Local authorities are coordinating with civil protection services to monitor the aftermath and enhance community safety measures to prevent further incidents.
“This attack underlines the ongoing challenges we face regarding safety and security here,” Sadovyi said. “We are committed to ensuring that our residents are safe, and we will work tirelessly to restore what has been damaged.”
