Three Wounded in Shooting at Augusta Homecoming Tailgate

Authorities said all three victims were adults and suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Three adults were wounded Saturday evening when gunfire erupted in the tailgate area outside Lucy C. Laney High School following the school’s homecoming football game, authorities said. A woman was taken into custody at the scene.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the school at 1339 Laney Walker Blvd. at about 6:05 p.m. Oct. 17 after receiving reports of a shooting with multiple victims. Two men and a woman suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to Augusta-area hospitals. Deputies said their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Authorities have not released their names or additional details about their medical conditions.

Investigators said the shooting followed a physical confrontation between Aiyana Lane and another woman in the tailgate area. Other people intervened and separated the women, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities allege Lane then produced a firearm and fired at least one shot in the direction of the woman involved in the initial confrontation. Investigators have not publicly detailed how each of the three people was struck.

Deputies took Lane into custody at the scene and recovered a firearm, authorities said. She faces three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, third-degree cruelty to children and a charge involving carrying a weapon within a school safety zone, at a school function or on school-provided transportation. The charges are allegations, and the investigation remains open.

The Richmond County School System said the people involved in the shooting were adults and that no students were involved. The district said student-athletes, cheerleaders, band members and students participating in homecoming activities were safe and accounted for. The shooting happened after Laney’s homecoming football game against T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School.

The district’s police department responded along with sheriff’s deputies. A school system officer was injured while responding to a separate altercation, district spokesperson Haley Lacuesta said. The officer was reported to be doing well. Officials did not release additional information about that incident or describe the nature of the officer’s injury.

Saturday’s homecoming events had been rescheduled from Oct. 10 because of severe weather concerns, according to the school. The revised schedule moved the homecoming activities, including the football game, to Oct. 17. The shooting occurred in the school’s parking and tailgate area after the game rather than during play on the field.

The Sheriff’s Office has not announced additional arrests in connection with the shooting or released further information about the three wounded adults. Investigators continued working to establish the circumstances surrounding the gunfire and said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
