Detectives changed the direction of the investigation after examining evidence at the northeast Indianapolis scene.
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis homicide detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a man found along Fall Creek Road early Wednesday after evidence at the scene led police to change their initial assessment of the death.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the 6800 block of Fall Creek Road on Oct. 28 after receiving a report of a person shot. Officers found an adult man with a gunshot wound, and emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police initially believed the death might have been a suicide. Homicide detectives later examined evidence and determined the case should instead be investigated as a homicide, according to information released by IMPD. Authorities have not publicly described the evidence that prompted that change.
The shift is significant because it changes the focus of the investigation from determining the circumstances of a self-inflicted death to examining whether another person was responsible. Police have not released information identifying a possible suspect or explaining what may have happened before the man was found.
The shooting was reported in the 6800 block of Fall Creek Road on Indianapolis’ northeast side. The area includes wooded sections and walking paths. Investigators have not said how long the man may have been at the location before officers arrived or whether detectives believe the shooting happened where he was found.
The man’s identity had not been publicly released in the initial reports. The Marion County Coroner’s Office was expected to release his name after relatives were notified and to make an official determination on the cause and manner of death.
Authorities also have not announced a motive or arrest. Detectives continued working to establish a timeline and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the investigation remained active.
IMPD homicide detectives are handling the case. Police have asked people with information about the death to contact investigators as detectives continue reviewing evidence and seeking information about what happened along Fall Creek Road.
