SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A tragic accident in central Illinois resulted in the loss of five lives, as a tanker truck carrying caustic anhydrous ammonia crashed, causing devastation in a small community. The incident, which occurred on U.S. 40 in Teutopolis, about 110 miles northeast of St. Louis, may have been triggered by another vehicle attempting to pass the chemical-laden truck, according to federal transportation officials.
The tanker truck jackknifed, colliding with a utility trailer and creating a six-inch hole in the chemical container, causing a spill of roughly half of the truck’s 7,500-gallon load. Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes confirmed that among the victims were three individuals from the same family, along with two adult motorists from out of state. Additionally, five individuals were airlifted to hospitals for treatment, their conditions remaining unknown at this time.
Following the crash, approximately 500 residents within a 1-mile radius of the site were evacuated, including parts of Teutopolis.
