Deadly San Jose Shooting Leaves Woman Dead, Person Detained

Police said a person of interest was arrested near Bonita Avenue and Sunny Court.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A woman was shot and killed early Sunday near Bonita Avenue and Sunny Court, where San Jose police found her wounded after reports of gunfire, authorities said.

The shooting brought homicide detectives to a residential area before dawn and left key questions unanswered, including what led to the gunfire and whether the detained person will face charges. Police said the woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Officers responded at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday after reports of a person shot in the area of Bonita Avenue and Sunny Court, according to the San Jose Police Department. When officers arrived, they found an adult woman suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Police said emergency responders took her to a hospital, but she did not survive. “The department’s homicide unit has taken over the active investigation,” police said in a statement released after the shooting.

Authorities said a person of interest was arrested near the scene, but they did not release that person’s name, age or relationship to the woman. Police also did not say whether a weapon was recovered, how many shots were fired or whether other people were injured. The woman’s name was withheld pending notification of her next of kin. Investigators had not released a motive as of Monday, and the case remained under review by homicide detectives.

The shooting happened in San Jose’s east side, near a mix of homes, apartments and neighborhood streets. The early morning response drew police to an area that was otherwise quiet after the holiday weekend. Detectives were expected to review evidence from the scene, including witness statements, possible surveillance video and physical evidence collected near the intersection. Police did not say whether the shooting happened in the street, outside a home or inside a nearby property.

No charging decision had been announced by Monday. In Santa Clara County, police generally submit homicide arrest reports to prosecutors, who decide whether to file criminal charges. Police said more information was expected Monday, but no additional details had been released by the time of this update. The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office is expected to identify the woman after family notifications are complete.

The case adds to San Jose’s ongoing homicide investigations in 2026. Police had reported 13 homicides in the city by late June, before the fatal shooting near Bonita Avenue and Sunny Court. Investigators have not said whether the woman and the person of interest knew each other. They also have not said whether the shooting was connected to any earlier disturbance, domestic dispute or other crime in the area.

The investigation remained active Monday, with the person of interest in custody and the victim’s identity still pending release by county officials.
