Deadly Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cantaloupe Declared Over After 400+ Illnesses

Atlanta, Georgia – The recent salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe has come to an end, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s announcement on Friday.

Over 400 individuals across 44 states fell ill as a result of the tainted cantaloupe, with 158 requiring hospitalization and six tragic fatalities. The outbreak also reached Canada, where more than 160 cases were reported, leading to 61 hospitalizations and seven deaths.

The affected Malchita and Rudy brand cantaloupes were distributed by various retailers, including Kwik Trip, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s, between September and December 2023. Consumers who may have purchased these cantaloupes during that timeframe are advised by the Food & Drug Administration to check if their products are part of the recall.

Experts recommend that anyone uncertain about the origin of their cantaloupe discard the fruit to err on the side of caution.

It is crucial for consumers to stay informed about product recalls and take necessary precautions to protect their health from contaminated food items. In light of this recent outbreak, vigilance in food safety practices remains paramount to prevent future incidents of foodborne illnesses.
