Beloved Imam and Social Justice Advocate Fatally Shot Outside Newark Mosque

NEWARK, NJ – The Muslim community in Newark, New Jersey, is mourning the loss of prominent figure Imam Hassan Sharif, who was tragically shot and killed outside the Masjid Muhammad-Newark mosque on Jan. 3. Known for his dedication to social justice and commitment to combating gun violence, Sharif’s death has left the community in shock.

Imam Sharif, a respected religious leader and advocate for unity in Newark, was shot multiple times outside the mosque at around 6:15 a.m. He succumbed to his injuries later that day after being rushed to a local hospital. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and law enforcement officials are actively investigating the case, searching for a suspect.

Aside from his role as an influential religious leader, Sharif also worked as a transportation security officer at Newark Liberty International Airport for over 15 years. This tragic incident has heightened concerns within the Muslim community, which has been increasingly targeted by hate crimes in recent years.

Governor Phil Murphy expressed his condolences, stating, “At a time when the Muslim community is concerned by an increase of bias incidents and crimes, I want to assure the Muslim community and people of all faiths that we will do everything in our power to keep all residents safe, especially in or near our houses of worship.”
