Community Mourns as Teenager Jayda Woods-Johnson Loses Life in Mall Shooting, Suspect Released on Bail

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — In a tragic incident at Alderwood Mall on July 3, 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson lost her life during a violent confrontation between two groups in the food court. A 16-year-old from Edmonds, who allegedly discharged the firearm that led to her death, was arrested but has since been released on bail, stirring concerns and disappointment among her grieving family.

Jayda was remembered by her family as a vibrant young girl with a zest for life. “She was like a firecracker, lighting up every room she entered and bringing joy and laughter to everyone around her,” said the family through a spokesperson, Cheryl Huffman. The family’s statement highlighted Jayda’s infectious energy and natural ability to make people join her in joyful activities.

The altercation that led to Jayda’s untimely death unfolded just after 6 p.m. Following the incident, the teenage suspect was taken into custody by police after his mother brought him to the station. Despite the severity of the allegations, he was granted bail shortly afterward, which has led to significant frustration and outcry from Jayda’s family.

“We are devastated to learn that the person accused of this heinous act is already back at home,” Jayda’s mother, Tabatha Johnson, expressed in a statement. “It’s shocking and it sends the wrong message about the seriousness of gun violence in our communities.”

Jayda, who was a student at Brier Terrace Middle School, was simply enjoying time with a friend while her friend’s parents waited outside the mall. Her family insists she was likely unaware of the fight that erupted nearby. Counselors have been available at her school to support classmates and staff affected by the tragedy.

The community has shown an outpouring of support for Jayda’s family during this challenging time. The Edmonds School District, where Jayda was enrolled, released a statement conveying deep condolences. “Our hearts go out to Jayda’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. We stand with you in grief and sorrow,” the district expressed.

Jayda is survived by her parents, Tabatha and Jeremy Johnson, and two younger brothers. To help manage the unexpected funeral costs and other related expenses, a fundraiser has been established, which has seen significant participation from community members sympathetic to the family’s loss.

The incident has reignited conversations about youth violence and gun control within the community, raising questions about the justice system’s handling of such cases involving young perpetrators. Jayda’s family and their supporters continue to seek justice and hope that their tragedy will lead to broader changes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
