LYNNWOOD, Wash. — In a tragic incident at Alderwood Mall on July 3, 13-year-old Jayda Woods-Johnson lost her life during a violent confrontation between two groups in the food court. A 16-year-old from Edmonds, who allegedly discharged the firearm that led to her death, was arrested but has since been released on bail, stirring concerns and disappointment among her grieving family.
Jayda was remembered by her family as a vibrant young girl with a zest for life. “She was like a firecracker, lighting up every room she entered and bringing joy and laughter to everyone around her,” said the family through a spokesperson, Cheryl Huffman. The family’s statement highlighted Jayda’s infectious energy and natural ability to make people join her in joyful activities.
The altercation that led to Jayda’s untimely death unfolded just after 6 p.m. Following the incident, the teenage suspect was taken into custody by police after his mother brought him to the station. Despite the severity of the allegations, he was granted bail shortly afterward, which has led to significant frustration and outcry from Jayda’s family.
