BELLEVUE, WA – Police in Bellevue unraveled a significant human trafficking case after responding to what initially appeared to be a routine domestic violence call. Officers sensed something was amiss, leading to the arrest of a man accused of exploiting a woman for sex work across multiple cities.
Cedric Dorsey, portraying himself on social media as a successful and influential figure, was charged with human trafficking, promoting prostitution, and illegal firearm possession. Authorities allege Dorsey coerced a woman into sex work in Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, and Las Vegas, maintaining control over her earnings.
Bellevue Police Major Ellen Inman explained that officers detected signs of trafficking and involved detectives after realizing the victim’s situation was perilous. The victim’s responses to police questions were reportedly scripted, prompting further investigation.
A search of Dorsey’s residence revealed $12,000 in cash and three firearms, including one stolen weapon and a banned firearm. This discovery supported the charges brought against him by King County prosecutors.
Prosecutor Leila McGinnis highlighted the violence inherent in such cases, using Dorsey’s social media posts as evidence during his trial. These posts included references to rules that discourage victims from cooperating with authorities.
Dorsey was found guilty and is now serving a 35-year prison sentence. His conviction marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their efforts to combat illegal sex work and trafficking.
The case underscores the challenges faced by local and state officials in addressing illegal sex work. Earlier this year, a legislative proposal aimed at increasing penalties for those purchasing sex was considered, reflecting ongoing efforts to curb such criminal activities.
Police emphasize the role of social media in advertising illegal activities, noting that publicly shared information can be instrumental in investigations. This case serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities exploited by traffickers and the importance of vigilance.
Bellevue police continue to work with local and state agencies to tackle human trafficking, aiming to protect vulnerable individuals and hold offenders accountable.
