Alabama Man Arrested for Detonating Explosive Outside Attorney General’s Office, Faces Federal Charges

Montgomery, Alabama – A 26-year-old man, Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, is facing federal charges after allegedly detonating an explosive device outside the office of Alabama’s attorney general. The incident took place on February 24, with no reported injuries or damage to nearby buildings.

According to Doug Howard, the law enforcement coordinator and public information officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Alabama, Calvert was arrested recently and appeared in court for the first time. He is charged with malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device, potentially facing between five to 20 years in prison without parole.

The arrest of Calvert was confirmed by the U.S. Attorney General Merrick Ross, who expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the FBI, state, and local law enforcement agencies in holding the defendant accountable for his actions. Acting United States Attorney Jonathan Ross also highlighted the importance of cooperation between law enforcement and the judiciary in ensuring justice is served.

The case involving Calvert is under investigation by the FBI Mobile Field Office, the Montgomery Resident Agency Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Russell T. Duraski and Brett J. Talley for the Middle District of Alabama.
