HOUSTON, Texas – A Houston man is facing murder charges after allegedly coaching a 16-year-old through a robbery that resulted in the teenager’s death. The victim, Edwin Quinones, was found dead in an elevator at the Haven at Elgin apartments after being shot on Dec. 12. According to court documents, 18-year-old Larry Holmes has been charged in connection with Quinones’ death, despite not being present during the robbery. The incident occurred when Quinones attempted to rob two men at gunpoint in an elevator and was shot during a struggle that ensued.
Police revealed that there is evidence showing Holmes and Quinones were in communication during the robbery, leading to Holmes being charged with felony murder through the Texas “law of parties.” This law holds each person involved in a crime criminally responsible as a “party” to the offense. Holmes is being held on a $275,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Jan. 4.
Legal analyst Carmen Roe explained that under this law, Holmes is being held responsible for the death as he “encouraged” Quinones to carry out the crime, resulting in a fatality. It is unlikely that the person who shot Quinones will face charges, as their actions would most likely be considered self-defense.
Meanwhile, residents of Haven on Elgin stated that gunfire is a common occurrence at the apartment complex and expressed concern over the safety of the area. Despite this, one resident revealed feeling unsettled by Quinones’ death, highlighting the ongoing sense of unease in the community.
