Among the crowd were families of the victims, who stood together as Premier Chris Minns delivered a heartfelt message to the women of New South Wales, reassuring them that they have the right to live their lives without the fear of violence.
Minns emphasized the importance of women feeling safe in their communities, condemning any notion that women should have to alter their behavior due to the anger of others. The premier, along with other dignitaries including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Governor Margaret Beazley, united in solidarity as they lit candles in honor of the lives lost in the tragic incident.
The atmosphere was one of grief and solidarity as the family of one victim, Ashlee Good, welcomed home her nine-month-old baby who had also been injured in the attack. NSW Health Minister Ryan Park provided an update on the baby girl’s condition, noting that she was receiving expert care but had been discharged from the hospital following surgery.
Waverley Mayor Paula Masselos echoed a sentiment of resilience, encouraging the community not to be deterred by the events that transpired. The majority of the vigil attendees, primarily young women, came together to pay their respects to the victims, a group consisting of five women and one man who tragically lost their lives.
The vigil saw a touching moment as the Cafe of the Gate of Salvation, an a capella gospel choir, performed a moving rendition of “Keep Your Loving Arms Around Me” to a silent crowd. Inspector Amy Scott, the heroic officer who confronted and neutralized the attacker, was also present among the mourners.
As the evening continued, there was a minute of silence observed in honor of the victims, followed by a stirring rendition of “Amazing Grace” by the choir. Counselors and chaplains were on hand to provide support to those in the community seeking solace and conversation in the wake of the tragedy. The vigil served as a poignant reminder of the strength and unity within the community as they came together to mourn and honor those who lost their lives.
