Off-Duty St. Landry Parish Corrections Deputy Fatally Shot in Opelousas Tragedy

Opelousas, Louisiana – A tragic shooting incident took the life of an off-duty St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office corrections deputy on Tuesday night, as confirmed by the Opelousas Police Department. The victim, identified as Chanterria “Mackey” Albert, 23, succumbed to her injuries at an Opelousas hospital following the shooting on Park Avenue. Another individual was also wounded in the incident but is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities were alerted to the situation after receiving reports of gunfire in the vicinity of Park Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Both victims had been rushed to the hospital by the time police officers arrived at the scene. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Department later confirmed that the deceased deputy was a member of their corrections staff.

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their team member due to what he described as a senseless act of gun violence in Opelousas. The Sheriff’s Office has vowed to collaborate with the Opelousas Police Department in the pursuit of the shooter, while the OPD’s investigation into the matter remains ongoing.

Chanterria Albert had been employed by the Sheriff’s Office on May 10, 2022. She had the opportunity to work alongside her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert.
