Lewiston Bowling Alley Reopens Six Months After Tragic Mass Shooting

Lewiston, Maine – The bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine that was the site of a tragic mass shooting last October has now reopened its doors. Just-In-Time Recreation, owned by Justin and Samantha Juray, welcomed patrons back on Friday, May 3, after a devastating shooting that claimed the lives of 18 people and left 13 others injured.

Gunman Robert Card carried out the shooting, killing eight individuals at the bowling alley before moving on to a nearby bar and taking the lives of 10 more people. The incident ended with Card taking his own life.

Despite the horrific tragedy that occurred at their establishment, the Jurays made the courageous decision to reopen, buoyed by the unwavering support of the Lewiston community. Samantha Juray acknowledged the emotional toll of the event, emphasizing the importance of moving forward and not letting the perpetrators win.

Justin Juray initially had reservations about reopening the bowling alley, but the overwhelming support from the community persuaded him to move forward. Kathy Lebel, the owner of Schemengees Bar & Grille where additional victims were killed, also expressed her intention to reopen at a different location.

Numerous patrons attended the reopening, including individuals like Colin who was present at the time of the shooting. Colin, along with his parents, shared in the bittersweet moment of celebrating the lives lost while also commemorating the resilience of Just-In-Time Recreation.

Employee Tom Giberti, hailed as a hero for saving the lives of several children during the shooting, spoke of the community’s anticipation for the bowling alley’s return. Despite sustaining serious injuries during the incident, Giberti has made a remarkable recovery and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community.

In honor of those who lost their lives, the bowling alley has created memorials displaying photos of the victims and dedicating bowling pins to each of the 18 shooting victims. The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America also stepped in to support the venue by providing new equipment and expertise to enhance the facility.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official reopening of the establishment, with Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline praising the community’s resilience and unity in the face of adversity. The event served as a symbol of strength and solidarity, demonstrating that Lewiston will not be deterred by tragedy.
