The attack left one woman dead and two teens hospitalized, police said.
CHICAGO, Ill. — Two people riding a motorcycle targeted an SUV Tuesday afternoon in Back of the Yards, firing into the vehicle and leaving a woman dead and two teens seriously injured, Chicago police said.
The attack unfolded near West 50th Street and South Hermitage Avenue, where police said a Honda SUV was heading west about 3:30 p.m. The motorcycle pulled up next to the SUV, and both riders drew guns and fired, authorities said.
A 26-year-old woman inside the SUV was shot in the back and later died at a hospital. An 18-year-old man was shot in the right hip and was hospitalized in serious condition. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the left arm and leg and was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.
The SUV, marked by bullet holes, crashed into a parked car after the shooting. Neighbors reported a fast burst of gunfire. Security video from the block recorded more than 10 shots, according to local reports.
One nearby resident said the moments after the shooting were chaotic as wounded people ran from the SUV. “Call the cops! Call the cops!” one victim said, according to the witness, who asked not to be identified.
Police did not release the woman’s name or identify the two wounded teens. Officials also had not said whether investigators believe the victims were targeted or whether the shooting was tied to any prior dispute.
No arrests had been announced by Wednesday. Detectives were searching for the motorcycle riders and reviewing evidence from the scene, including surveillance video from homes and businesses near the block.
The investigation remained active Wednesday, and police had not released a description of the motorcycle or suspects.
