Investigators are reviewing a stabbing and fatal shooting involving three adults at a South Side residence.
CHICAGO — A woman remained in police custody Saturday as investigators considered charges after she allegedly shot a man who had stabbed another woman during a domestic-related confrontation in Englewood, authorities said.
Police had not announced charges or identified the woman who fired the gun as of Saturday morning. A firearm was recovered after the violence late Friday in the 400 block of West Marquette Road.
The shooting followed an argument between a 38-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman inside a home at about 11 p.m., according to a preliminary police investigation. Officers said the dispute became physical and the man produced a sharp object.
Police said he stabbed the 22-year-old woman in the stomach and pulled her outside. Another woman who had been inside the home saw the confrontation and allegedly opened fire, striking the man in the chest.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His identity had not been released pending notification of his family.
The stabbing victim was hospitalized in good condition, police said. Authorities did not release further information about her treatment or say whether investigators had interviewed her.
Police described the incident as domestic-related but did not explain how the people involved knew one another. They also did not release information about who owned the recovered firearm or whether the detained woman was legally authorized to possess it.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under review. Police had not publicly characterized the gunfire as justified or said whether the woman claimed she was protecting herself or the stabbing victim.
Charging decisions in an active investigation can depend on witness accounts, physical evidence and other facts gathered by detectives. Police did not say whether prosecutors had reviewed the case or when a charging decision might be announced.
