Wilson Youth Soccer Association ’06 Girls Earn Third Consecutive U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series Berth

Wilson, North Carolina- The Wilson Youth Soccer Association ’06 Girls team continues to showcase their dominance in the sport as they head to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship Series for the third consecutive year. After an impressive performance at the National League P.R.O. event in Tampa, Florida, the team secured a spot in the summer tournament with a flawless 3-0 record.

Making history for the first time, the Explosion triumphed in all three matches at a national level, culminating in a victory at the USYS National League P.R.O. event. By clinching the U19 Girls Silver Bracket title with three shutout wins, the WYSA ’06 Girls bypassed the need to compete in the USYS Region III Championships in June.

Head coach Randol Mendoza, in his final appearance after four successful years leading the team, commended his players’ resilience and determination amid various challenges and roster changes. Despite the absence of key players, the team seamlessly integrated three younger talents from the WYSA ranks, contributing significantly to their standout performance.

In a pivotal match against Indiana Fire Academy, the Explosion secured a 1-0 victory with a goal from Cappa Bunn, assisted by Bailey Powell. This win marked a significant breakthrough for the team, known for struggling in the initial matches of national events. Adjusting their formation at halftime, the team displayed a defensive prowess that sealed the crucial victory.

Following their triumph in the first game, the Explosion showcased their offensive capabilities in subsequent matches, earning a decisive 3-0 win against Ohio Galaxies FC and a hard-fought 1-0 victory over JB Marine Garabedian. Strong teamwork and strategic adjustments propelled the team to a perfect record in the tournament.

Noteworthy throughout the competition was the team’s stalwart defense, led by goalkeeper Darby Wallig, whose standout performance included multiple crucial saves. Mendoza emphasized the team’s defensive strength, underscoring their ability to limit opponents’ scoring opportunities and maintain composure under pressure.

As the team gears up for another shot at the national championship in Orlando, Florida, in July, Mendoza reflected on the invaluable contributions of various individuals, including former players, parents, and team managers. Their collective effort and support have been instrumental in the team’s success and journey to the national stage.

Despite changes and challenges, the Wilson Youth Soccer Association ’06 Girls team remains a formidable force in youth soccer, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and unwavering determination as they pursue their ultimate goal of a national championship title.
