Broome, Australia — A man has been sentenced to five years in prison following a brutal assault on his heavily pregnant former partner, an incident that raised serious concerns about domestic violence. The attack occurred at a petrol station on January 28, 2025, compelling the victim to undergo an emergency caesarean section.
During a court hearing, it was revealed that the woman, who was 36 weeks pregnant at the time, had reunited with her former partner out of fear for her safety. State Prosecutor Tracy Tan recounted how the man commanded the woman to follow him from the town center to the petrol station on Napier Terrace. Once there, he violently threw her to the ground and commenced repeated assaults.
Witnesses intervened, with two men rushing to help the victim and alerting emergency services. Testimony affirmed that the woman was holding her abdomen and expressing distress, acutely aware that her unborn child might be in danger. She sustained severe injuries, including a broken hand and multiple bruises.
The perpetrator, whose identity is withheld to protect the victim, was charged with unlawful assault that caused bodily harm along with aggravating circumstances. While awaiting trial in custody, he was implicated in further attempts to manipulate the victim. Authorities received reports of multiple phone calls he made to her, persuading her to drop charges against him. This prompted an additional charge of attempting to pervert justice.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Belinda Lonsdale characterized the assault as “sustained and brutal,” highlighting the severity captured on CCTV footage. She noted the man’s violence stemmed from feelings of jealousy regarding the woman’s pregnancy with another man. Judge Lonsdale stated that his actions could have taken the lives of both mother and child.
Examining the circumstances surrounding the assault, the judge acknowledged the man’s personal struggles, including a recent family death and a marital breakdown. However, she underscored that such challenges do not excuse his violent behavior. “This sentence serves not only as punishment but also as a warning to others involved in similar acts of violence,” she emphasized.
In her concluding remarks, the judge reaffirmed the need to protect victims of domestic abuse, making it clear that such actions will lead to serious consequences. The five-year sentence will be backdated to the date of the assault, with the possibility of parole available after three years.
