Shelby Crouch, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), stated that the agency considers avian influenza a likely cause for the fatalities. “Given recent reports of highly pathogenic avian influenza in black vultures, we are treating this case seriously and have sent samples for testing,” Crouch explained in a recent update.
The DWR is coordinating with the University of Georgia’s Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study for initial analyses. Results from these preliminary tests are typically returned swiftly, with findings to be communicated to Rocky Mount authorities. Should any samples test positive, they will be forwarded to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories for further confirmation.
Local authorities discovered the carcasses in a creek bed located at the intersection of Dent Street and Franklin Street, prompting a professional evaluation by a DWR biologist on site.
