Queens, New York – A 21-year-old woman narrowly escaped a terrifying attempted rape at a subway station in Jamaica, Queens in February. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Donovan Simmon, was arrested and charged with attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment, assault, and lewdness in connection to the brutal attack that took place at the 169th Street station.
The victim, known as Jamileth, recounted her harrowing experience to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, revealing that she encountered the man while riding an F train home after finishing her night shift cleaning offices. As she tried to exit at 169th Street, the assailant blocked the doors and engaged in a lewd act before following her up to the mezzanine level of the station.
Despite her efforts to evade the man, Jamileth was knocked down, assaulted, and nearly raped behind a secluded wall within the station. Her screams for help caught the attention of a vigilant security guard who intervened, preventing a tragedy from unfolding.
Following the traumatic incident, Jamileth expressed her ongoing fear and distress, admitting to constantly looking over her shoulder and feeling anxious while walking in public. Having recently migrated to the US from Ecuador, she sought medical treatment for her injuries and adjusted her work schedule to avoid nighttime commutes.
Simmon, the perpetrator, has a history of prior arrests for robbery, public lewdness, and fare evasion, underscoring the urgency of addressing repeat offenders within the criminal justice system.
