Violent Attack on Vulnerable Nomadic Community Sparks Outrage in Udupi District

UDUPI, India (AP) – An appalling event unfolded as local criminals viciously attacked the huts of the vulnerable nomadic Shillekyata community near the Gulwadi River in Kundapur. The attack, which occurred on June 6, left women and children injured and in a state of chaos. The Udupi District Committee of the Coastal Occupational Nomadic Shillekyata Rights has called for swift action from the police against the assailants.

Members of the Shillekyata community had previously faced threats from locals while fishing in the Gulwadi river. The criminals forbade them from entering the water and issued life-threatening warnings. Despite complaints made to the authorities, the situation escalated when a group armed with weapons stormed into their huts during a fishing excursion. The brutal attack resulted in severe injuries to the elderly, women, and children, who were also verbally abused and threatened.

The lack of adequate response from local authorities has emboldened the aggressors to target the nomadic community, prompting calls for immediate protection and legal action. The DYFI state leader and the president of the nomadic Shillekyata Community have highlighted the urgent need for intervention to prevent further violence. The community leaders have warned of a protest if the authorities fail to safeguard the vulnerable community.

Following discussions with the district superintendent of police, assurances were given that protective measures would be implemented and the culprits apprehended. A case has been filed against the perpetrators at the Kundapur rural police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The incident underscores the vulnerabilities faced by marginalized communities and the importance of prompt and effective responses from law enforcement agencies. The nomadic Shillekyata community remains at risk, highlighting the pressing need for sustained protection and support to prevent further harm. Authorities must act decisively to ensure justice for the victims and prevent future attacks on the community.
