GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. – The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the death of a heavily armed man discovered at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs. The individual, identified as 20-year-old Diego Barajas Medina, was found dead in a statement issued by the sheriff’s office on Monday. It is believed that the man broke into the park after hours and was not directly affiliated with the establishment.
The suspect was found wearing tactical clothing and was heavily armed with a semi-automatic rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, and multiple loaded magazines for both weapons. He was also wearing body armor and what appeared to be a ballistic helmet. Improvised explosive devices were found with the man’s body and in his vehicle, which was left outside the park’s entrance. Fortunately, the Grand Junction Bomb Squad successfully disarmed the bombs and cleared the park of any potential hidden devices, ensuring the safety of the community and first responders.
Prior to the discovery of the weapons, authorities also conducted a search of the man’s home. Although they have not disclosed their findings, they have assured the public that there is currently no threat to their safety. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the amusement park has been closed indefinitely.
This incident marks the second death at the park in two years, following the tragic death of a 6-year-old girl in September 2021. The family of Wongel Estifanos, who died as a result of a tragic accident on a ride, has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Glenwood Caverns. Despite the recent events, the authorities are assuring the public that they continue to diligently investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are working to ensure the safety of the community.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities continue to work tirelessly to gather more information about the events that transpired at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
