UNLV Tragedy and Las Vegas Tower Shooting Highlight in FBI’s 2023 Active Shooter Report

Las Vegas — The FBI recently shared its annual analysis on active shooter incidents across the U.S., revealing two such events last year in Las Vegas, heightening local security concerns. This review identifies active shooters as individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in populated areas.

The 2023 review includes a June incident at Turnberry Towers and a devastating mass shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) campus in December. Overall, the FBI documented 48 qualifying incidents nationwide.

At Turnberry Towers, a confrontation escalated when 32-year-old Andrew Warrender, wielding a rifle, fired at a security officer. The weapon jammed after the initial shot, allowing the security officer to retaliate and incapacitate Warrender until police arrival. Impressively, this marked one of only two situations last year where security personnel effectively neutralized the threat.

Warrender’s trial is currently on the court docket for March next year, where he will face charges related to the incident.

The UNLV shooting was particularly harrowing, with 67-year-old Anthony Polito opening fire within Beam Hall, tragically killing three faculty members. The victims, identified as Drs. Patricia Navarro Velez, Cha-Jan “Jerry” Chang, and Naoko Takemaru, were mourned in a heartfelt campus memorial. A fourth victim sustained injuries but survived. Police intervention brought the assault to an end, with officers fatally shooting Polito outside the venue.

These incidents shed light on a concerning pattern; the major age group implicated in active shooter situations spans from 25 to 34 years old, with 17 shooters falling into this category in 2023, including Warrender. Polito stands out as an anomaly, being one of only three shooters nationwide between the ages of 65 and 74 and one of 12 fatally confronted by law enforcement last year.

The local community and university settings, having been directly impacted by these violent events, have spurred dialogues on public safety and the effectiveness of campus security strategies. Increased security measures and preventive tactics are being discussed to safeguard against potential future threats.

As the nation continues to grapple with the complexities of gun violence and its prevention, these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of active shooter events and the pivotal role that rapid response teams and well-prepared security personnel play in protecting public spaces.
