Grand Rapids, Michigan – A man who illegally entered the United States is facing murder charges in the tragic death of a 25-year-old woman in Grand Rapids. Brandon Ortiz-Vite, a 25-year-old Mexican national, has been charged with felony murder, open murder, carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm in connection to the death of Ruby Garcia on March 22, 2024, according to officials.
According to Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker and an ICE spokesperson, Ortiz-Vite could potentially face life in prison without the possibility of parole for Garcia’s death. The young woman was found dead with gunshot wounds on Southbound US-131 and Leonard Street NW last Friday, state police confirmed.
Becker stated that Garcia and Ortiz-Vite were in a vehicle together at the time of the shooting, revealing that they were in a romantic relationship. Ortiz-Vite voluntarily contacted Allegan County Central Dispatch on Sunday to be questioned regarding Garcia’s death, leading authorities to locate and arrest him in Fennville.
Ortiz-Vite has a history of legal issues, with run-ins dating back to 2017, including charges related to drunk driving and illegal entry into a residence, as per court records. In August 2020, he was arrested and ordered to be removed from the United States but managed to re-enter without inspection by immigration officials.
