Los Angeles, California – Tensions have been escalating at the University of California, Los Angeles, between students supporting Israel’s actions in Gaza and those advocating for a ceasefire and university divestment. The situation reached a boiling point in the middle of the night last Tuesday when a violent mob attacked a Palestine solidarity tent village on the campus.
The attackers, described as masked young men, stormed the encampment with loudspeakers blaring sounds of crying babies, strobe lights, irritant gases, and firecrackers. The campers were left defenseless as they were beaten and assaulted with poles. Despite calls for help, university security and police did not intervene until much later, allowing the chaos to unfold unchecked.
Unlike other universities where law enforcement is quick to respond to such incidents, UCLA’s response was notably lacking. Security guards hired by the university retreated to safety, and campus police arrived but left shortly after, citing an attack. The Los Angeles Police Department did not arrive until hours later, allowing the violence to persist until the early morning.
