One victim was critically injured after gunfire struck their truck during a confrontation along Winchester Road in Whitehaven.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two men were wounded Wednesday night in a Whitehaven shooting that a witness said happened while they were making DoorDash deliveries, according to police accounts and local reports. One of the men was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Memphis police responded at about 8:45 p.m. Oct. 7 to a shooting near the 3300 block of Winbrook Drive. Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. The second man was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered critical. A man was detained after the shooting, but police had not announced charges or identified him in the latest available reports.
A girlfriend of one of the victims told police that the men were delivering food when the shooting occurred. Reports described the victims as traveling in a truck along Winchester Road when a confrontation developed with people inside a red four-door sedan. Police had not independently confirmed that the men were working for DoorDash at the time or released their identities.
Accounts of what happened immediately before the shooting differed. One victim told investigators that the driver of the red sedan swerved in front of the truck and began brake-checking it before moving into the right lane. The victim said gunfire then came from the sedan toward the truck.
A witness gave investigators a different description of the roadway encounter. That person said the victims’ truck appeared to accidentally move in front of the red sedan and that the two vehicles then swerved in front of each other several times. According to that account, the sedan eventually pulled alongside the truck before shots were fired.
Witnesses reported hearing about 10 shots. Local reporting said the truck’s driver was struck in the jaw and the other man was wounded in the leg. Police initially described one victim as critically injured and the other as being in non-critical condition. No additional medical update on either man had been released as of Friday.
The Memphis Police Department has not said what investigators believe caused the confrontation or whether they have determined who fired the shots. Although one person was detained following the incident, authorities had not disclosed that person’s possible connection to the shooting or announced any criminal charges in the latest reports.
The investigation remains open. Police have not released the names of the victims, identified the people reportedly traveling in the red sedan or said whether investigators are seeking additional suspects. The differing accounts of the events leading to the gunfire also remain unresolved.
The shooting left investigators working to establish both the sequence of the roadway confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the gunfire. Authorities said there were no further updates after the initial detention, leaving the cause of the shooting and any possible charges undetermined.
