Two Arrested in Connection to Fatal Shooting at Delaware State University

WILMINGTON, Del. – Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection to the tragic shooting incident that took place at Delaware State University last month, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old woman, Camay Mitchell De Silva.

The victim, Camay Mitchell De Silva, lost her life after being shot on the university’s main campus during the early hours of April 21. Investigations revealed that the suspects, identified as 20-year-old Destry Jones and 18-year-old Damian Hinson, were not enrolled as students at the university.

According to police reports, Jones and Hinson were involved in a physical altercation with two other men, aged 20 and 21, on the campus. In the course of the fight, shots were fired, with Camay tragically getting caught in the crossfire.

Despite not being part of the initial altercation, Camay sustained a gunshot wound to the head and passed away from her injuries at a local hospital. Authorities clarified that she was not the intended target of the shooting.

After conducting witness interviews, reviewing video surveillance footage, and analyzing forensic evidence, law enforcement officials were able to track down and apprehend the suspects. Jones was located in an apartment in Brooklyn, New York, on May 2, awaiting extradition to Delaware. Hinson was arrested on the same day at a shopping center in Dover and is currently held in Sussex County.

Both Jones and Hinson have been charged with murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses. Murders charges are directly linked to Camay’s death, while the attempted murder charges stem from shots fired at the other individuals involved in the campus fight. Dover police have since increased patrols on the university campus to collaborate with campus security and university administrators, ensuring the safety of all students and staff.
