Farrukhabad, India — In a chilling instance of familial betrayal and deception, a 35-year-old woman named Alka, who contracted a hitman to kill her rebellious teenage daughter, was herself murdered in a grim twist of fate. The intended assassin, 38-year-old Subhash Singh, revealed to be the secret lover of the intended victim, turned on the woman who hired him, police revealed this week.
Alka’s conflict began when her 17-year-old daughter eloped with a man from their local community. Unaware of her daughter’s ongoing relationship with Singh, Alka decided to put an end to her daughter’s behavior, which she found intolerable. Police investigations disclosed that on September 27, Alka paid Singh ₹50,000 ($610) to murder her daughter.
However, Singh chose a different course. Instead of following through with the mother’s command, he confided the murderous plan to the young woman. In response, the daughter proposed a macabre counter-offer: kill her mother instead. The pair plotted the murder, and following Alka’s death, the skewed justice they enacted emerged only through police interrogation after their arrest.
Officials arrested Singh and the teenager late Wednesday, charging them with murder among other offenses. Authorities expressed their astonishment over the shocking developments of the case, reflecting on the disturbing elements of trust and betrayal that led to the tragic outcome.
Adding to local disquiet, this incident followed closely on another gruesome case in Bengaluru where a 26-year-old woman, Mahalaxmi, was murdered and her body parts were discovered in a refrigerator. The suspect in that case, a colleague of the deceased, allegedly committed suicide shortly after law enforcement began to uncover the crime.
Mahalaxmi, estranged from her husband and working at a local mall, became the subject of suspicion after neighbors complained of an unpleasant odor emanating from her apartment. Her family, residing in Tripura, was notified and discovered her dismembered remains during a distressing visit.
These incidents cumulatively underline a troubling trend of violent personal disputes turning deadly, shedding light on deeper societal issues including the handling of personal vendettas that escalate beyond control. They contribute to an ongoing dialogue about law enforcement’s role in preempting such extreme acts of violence and the societal structures that allow these tragic narratives to unfold.
Authorities continue to investigate both cases, seeking further clarity and justice for those tragically wrapped up in the violent circumstances of love, betrayal, and familial discord. In response to these ghastly events, community leaders and activists are calling for stronger measures to protect vulnerable individuals within families and enhance mental health support systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.
