Transport Worker Charged After Three Disabled Men Die in Running Car

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A transport company driver was arrested Friday after three disabled adults were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning inside a vehicle left running in a garage, police said.

Police identified the victims as 25-year-old Colton Moser, 22-year-old Mosa’ati Moa and 39-year-old Tim Jones, who were being transported between assisted living facilities before being left in the vehicle, according to the West Valley City Police Department.

Authorities said 25-year-old Isaiah Pulu was booked on three counts of manslaughter and aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult after the men died from carbon monoxide fumes. The police department said Pulu was responsible for driving the patients when he stopped at his home Friday morning and left the car running in a garage for several hours.

Pulu told investigators he left the victims in the vehicle while he went inside to eat and watch television, saying he expected to return quickly. When he came back in the early afternoon, he found the garage door closed, the engine off and the men unresponsive, police said. First responders pronounced all three dead at the scene.

Officials did not immediately say whether the patients were able to communicate or help themselves, but noted the men were under Pulu’s care and supervision at the time. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that can build up in enclosed spaces and prove deadly, especially when a car engine is running in an attached structure.

Pulu was held without bail at the Salt Lake County Jail. Police said the investigation remains active as authorities continue to review the case and interview witnesses.
