Train Violence: Man Sentenced to 12 Years for Brutal Bottle Attack on Strangers

Glasgow, Scotland — A 48-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a vicious attack on two passengers aboard a train, marking a disturbing episode of violence in public transportation. Thomas Craig, hailing from East Renfrewshire, was convicted of attempted murder and assault after he used a glass bottle as a weapon during the incident on February 16, 2024.

Craig was found guilty in November at the High Court in Glasgow. A judge imposed a 15-year extended sentence, which includes 12 years of imprisonment followed by three years on supervised release. Judge Lord Arthurson condemned Craig’s actions, emphasizing the right of the public to travel safely without fear of violence.

The attack occurred during a journey from Glasgow to Perth, where Craig, reportedly intoxicated, began interacting with fellow passengers. The situation escalated quickly; within minutes, he unleashed a torrent of violence on his first victim, striking him repeatedly with the bottle. Despite attempting to escape, the victim was pursued by Craig, who continued the assault until the bottle shattered, leaving him with the dangerous remnants of the glass.

In a tragic turn, the victim’s friend intervened only to find himself the target of Craig’s aggression. The second man endured multiple punches before he was stabbed with the jagged edge of the bottle. His severe injuries included a stab wound near his heart, a collapsed lung, and significant blood loss that necessitated intensive medical care.

Lord Arthurson characterized the assault against the second victim as “a wholly murderous attack.” Both individuals involved in the assault were in their early 20s at the time and have since required extensive medical treatment following the incident.

After committing the violent acts, Craig returned to his seat, disposed of the weapon, and attempted to steal the victim’s phone before changing into a different shirt. The authorities were alerted, and when the train reached Larbert railway station, police arrested Craig while paramedics tended to the injured.

Detective Inspector Marc Francey of British Transport Police criticized Craig’s conduct, labeling it “truly despicable.” He noted that the actions of Craig not only harmed the victims but also instilled fear among other passengers. Francey expressed gratitude for the quick response from individuals on board, particularly a nurse who rendered aid to the victims during the chaotic aftermath.

The case serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers present in seemingly safe environments, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance and support for public safety measures.
