Chestertown, Md. — A tragic house explosion on Valentine’s Day resulted in the death of a 68-year-old resident and left a Chestertown home in ruins, while five family members managed to escape unharmed, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal. The incident occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m. at 6904 Pentridge Court, prompting a swift response from local firefighters.
When emergency crews from the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Company and nearby departments arrived, they found the residence engulfed in flames. Initial reports indicated that one individual remained trapped inside while five others—including the victim’s family—were able to flee safely.
Fire officials stated the extent of the damage required crews to conduct operations from outside the structure due to the risk of further collapse. Excavators were called in to assist with debris removal as investigators began their work that night.
The victim was identified as Charles William Heaps. Deputy state fire marshals discovered his body beneath layers of rubble after extensive search efforts. The five surviving family members, consisting of Heaps’s wife, children, and grandchildren, were in a separate part of the house at the time of the explosion, which contributed to their survival. A family pet did not survive the incident.
According to reports from the family, there was an explosion before flames spread throughout the home. Witness statements and investigations suggest that Heaps may have been near a wood stove when the explosion occurred. While the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, officials believe it may have resulted from a combination of propane vapors and an electrical malfunction.
