Mumbai, India — Sambhaji Patil, an accomplished shooter known for his remarkable talents and contributions to the sport, died in a tragic car accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. He was 27 years old.
The accident occurred around 10 a.m. when Patil was en route to Gujarat for shooting practice. He was traveling in a Toyota Fortuner driven by his fellow shooter and friend, Yash Choudhary. Patil, who hailed from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, was seated in the front passenger seat when the vehicle struck a truck while attempting to overtake.
According to police officials, Choudhary was reportedly driving at a high speed when he attempted to change lanes but failed to notice the approaching truck. The impact of the collision severely damaged the front of the luxury vehicle.
Emergency services rushed Patil to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Choudhary sustained injuries in the incident and is currently receiving medical attention. Family members of Patil arrived at the hospital later in the day, where they were informed of the heartbreaking news. Plans for his last rites are now underway in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.
Law enforcement has opened a case of accidental death in connection with the incident. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, particularly regarding speed and lane changing.
Patil gained national prominence in 2016 when he secured a gold medal in the 25-meter standard pistol event at the Junior World Cup in Azerbaijan. He continued to make strides in the sport, achieving a commendable 23rd place finish at the world championship in the same discipline the following year.
Trained under the tutelage of renowned shooter Jaspal Rana, Patil was also noted for his role as a Sports Officer at the Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune, where he dedicated himself to fostering the next generation of athletes.
As the shooting community mourns the loss of this rising star, tributes are pouring in, reflecting on Patil’s contributions and the bright future that now remains unrealized due to this unforeseen tragedy.
