Honolulu, Hawaii — A tragic incident during a New Year’s Eve celebration in Honolulu has claimed a sixth life, intensifying scrutiny over the use of illegal fireworks in residential areas. Authorities confirmed a 30-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries early Wednesday morning at a local hospital, though her name has yet to be released.
The catastrophic event, initially resulting in three fatalities, occurred amid what was supposed to be a festive gathering. However, it turned deadly when an explosion, triggered by illegal fireworks, set off devastation. Officials later identified the first victims as Carmelita Benigno, 61, and Nelie Ibarra, 58, who were declared dead at the site of the explosion. Shortly afterward, 23-year-old Jennifer Van also died from her injuries sustained in the blast.
The calamity continued its toll with the death of 3-year-old Cassius Ramos-Benigno on January 6. The series of deaths highlighted ongoing concerns about the dangers associated with unauthorized fireworks.
In response to the severity of the injuries, six individuals were airlifted to the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center Valleywise Health in Phoenix for specialized treatment. Among them, 29-year-old Kevin Vallesteros endured a battle with his injuries before succumbing on January 28.
Following the incident, law enforcement intensified its crackdown on illegal fireworks, leading to the arrest of ten individuals suspected to be connected with the explosion. Investigations at the scene led to the recovery of approximately 500 pounds of unused fireworks, which were dangerously stored in the carport and vehicles of attendees.
The Straub Benioff Medical Center in Honolulu currently continues to treat four individuals impacted by the explosion, as the community reels from the disastrous effects of the unlawful celebration.
